Free Time in Winterthur

Neumarkt

The Neumarkt is near the train and bus station. There are lots of nice cafes. In summer it’s like a big garden cafe. Lots of people come to the Neumarkt in the afternoon and also in the evening. There also is a big cinema. You’ll find people of all Downtown you find many street cafés. Some of them are only bars and others also offer meals. Here it’s good to go out and have a drink.

For all brits who have a little bit of home sickness we’ve got Paddy O'Brien's old Irish Pub. It’s at the Merkurstreet 25, for many students too close to the university (www.paddyobriens.ch).

For eating you find many good and also cheap restaurants in the “Oberer Graben 26”. For example the Spaghetti Factory. There you find all kinds of spaghetti.

Near the Spaghetti Factory is the “Schäfli” (Oberer Graben 18). Here you find some traditional Swiss food. The prices are in the same range as the Spaghetti Factory.

Also near the Spaghetti Factory is the Restaurant Sonne (Marktgasse 13-15) with some traditional Swiss food. ZHAW students have a discount of 20% with their campus card for food!

Main Train & Bus Station

This will probably be the first place you see when you arrive in Winterthur. For more information choose public transport. Around the main station there are lots of big shopping centres like EPA, Migros, and Manor. There’s also the main post office at this place. If you look around at this place you see a red multistory building. This is the red-tower, where you find another bar at the top.

Parks

In and around Winterthur there are many green parks and forrests. Just enjoy them in spring, summer and autumn.

Marktgasse

This is the central shopping mile in Winterthur. You find all kinds of shops. We’ve got also two bigger shopping centers. The first one is Manor/Coop, which is behind the main post office not far from the railway station. And the second one is Neuwiesen. This one is on the other side of the main train station. There you find all the things you need at home.

Sport in Winterthur

The ZHAW boast a lot of sport facilities (in cooperation with ASVZ). Check out www.asvz.ch (German/English). There are also many other facilities you can use like squash halls, swimming pools and in winter you can go ice-skating. The offer is big and you find more information on sport.winterthur.ch (German).
